Births at HELIOS

All HELIOS hospitals’ obstetric departments operate according to a high and uniform standard of medical quality and service under the motto “Safe & Individual”. The purpose of this standard is to provide mother and child with as much security as possible, and to discharge satisfied parents and babies after birth. Newborns receive special attention and are given optimum medical care. Another component of this concept is the HELIOS New Parents’ School.

HELIOS New Parents’ School

Having a child changes parents’ lives completely. This is why HELIOS wants to help parents adjust to this new situation and has set up the HELIOS New Parents’ School: at every HELIOS hospital, couples are able to tour the delivery room and learn everything they need to know for this new step in their lives through numerous courses – from preparing for the birth to proper baby care. For the birth itself, all modern medical procedures as well as alternative methods are available to expectant mothers at all the hospitals, for example, methods for alleviating pain. When a Cesarean section is needed, HELIOS hospitals practice the original, gentle method. Of course, the expectant mother can decide for herself which birthing method she wants, provided the method selected is not restricted for medical reasons.

HELIOS Neuronet: high-tech diagnostics for combating strokes

The close network of HELIOS hospitals can save lives: through the HELIOS Neuronet, patients in rural areas are able to receive treatment at a hospital located nearby that is video-linked to one of HELIOS’ Neurology Centers. In acute, life-threatening situations, such as in the event of a stroke, diagnoses can be made via the HELIOS Neuronet and the best experts can be consulted. This way the patient benefits from all the available expertise of the Group without losing valuable time making a long trip to a large hospital. Because when it comes to a stroke, every second counts: the more quickly and competently medical aid can be administered, the greater the patient’s chances of survival and recovery.

LDR brachytherapy: minimally invasive radiation of prostate cancer

The HELIOS hospital Erfurt and the HELIOS regional hospital Gotha/Ohrdruf form the first regional brachytherapy center in Thuringia. LDR brachytherapy is a minimally invasive procedure for treating prostate cancer in its early stages. Instead of the otherwise common radical surgery, with this method the urologist implants rice-grain-sized, slightly radioactive titanium pins in the prostate, and their radiation destroys the cancer cells. LDR brachytherapy is just as effective as the radical operation, i.e. complete removal of the prostate, but has fewer severe adverse side effects.

Gastrointestinal Center West: specialists’ expertise bundled in one center

Since the Gastrointestinal Center West was founded at the HELIOS hospital Schwelm in June 2006, colon cancer, the second most commonly occurring cancer in Germany, can now be confronted more effectively – both from a diagnostic as well as a therapeutic standpoint. The acute care hospitals Schwelm, Siegburg, Wuppertal and Bochum-Linden have agreed on strict quality guidelines and bundle their medical expertise. More than 1.5 million people live within Gastrointestinal Center West’s catchment area, of which around 500 undergo colon surgery each year. In addition to this, 5,000 colonoscopies are performed annually.

HELIOS Spinal Column Network Südharz: bundled expertise for treating spinal column diseases

The HELIOS Spinal Column Network Südharz offers comprehensive orthopedic and neurosurgical expertise in the treatment of diseases of the spinal column. At the epicenter of this network is the HELIOS hospital Bleicherode, a hospital specializing in orthopedics that provides treatment to around 3,700 inpatients annually. The networking aspect of the Spinal Column Network lies in the hospital’s close relationship with private practice physicians. Patients profit most notably from the competent, interdisciplinary treatment at one location as well as from optimally coordinated procedures, both during and after their inpatient stay. All operations – orthopedic as well as neurosurgical – are performed at the hospital. The HELIOS hospital Bleicherode also delivers satisfaction through its pleasant atmosphere, highly modern decor and distinctive attention to service.

Postacute care at Altona children’s hospital

At Altona children’s hospital in Hamburg, a rehabilitation ward of the HELIOS hospital Geesthacht has been created, which is unique in Germany and has specialized in neuro-orthopedic and postoperative rehabilitation. Children with severe deformities of the extremities and spinal column are postoperatively rehabilitated and treated there under the supervision of the operating surgeon. Fifteen children and adolescents aged 0-18 years can be admitted, with accommodation for their guardian in Rooming-In units if necessary. The therapies concentrate on ambulation training, treadmill training, medical training therapy, specific physiotherapy, ergo-therapeutic rehabilitation and therapy in an exercise pool. The patients follow these therapies the entire time, from the day of the operation until they are discharged from postacute care.

Pneumology Center at the HELIOS hospital Emil von Behring

Together with the Pneumology Clinic (specializing in infectious diseases and oncology) and the Pediatric Pneumology Clinic (specializing in cystic fibrosis), the Thoracic Surgery Clinic at the HELIOS hospital Emil von Behring in Berlin-Zehlendorf forms a center of expertise in the area of pulmonary diseases. The diagnostics and therapies are state-of-the-art because the Center’s doctors are involved in devising standards in many sub-areas at a national and international level. In daily practice the physicians’ goal is to create an individual treatment plan with the patients. In the compound of the specialty building, which is centrally located in Berlin, a wide range of the most modern technology, short distances and bright and pleasant rooms ensure sophisticated and comfortable patient care.

A distinctive feature of the Pneumology Center is the Christiane Herzog Center for Pediatric Pneumology. Here, cystic fibrosis patients of all ages and from practically all the federal states of Germany are given optimum outpatient, day patient and full inpatient care by a highly specialized, multi-professional team. The Center ranks among the largest cystic fibrosis centers in Germany. Patient treatment and care are supported by a specialized team of nutrition consultants, dietary assistants, physical therapists, and experienced psychologists.

Breast Center at the HELIOS hospital Berlin-Buch

With the treatment of 230 newly diagnosed women, the breast center at the HELIOS hospital Berlin-Buch is one of the seven major breast centers for the region Berlin-Brandenburg. The doctors in Buch examine 8,000 women annually, and evaluate 8,000 mammograms and 2,000 ultrasounds. However, when it comes to improving breast cancer care, it is not about numbers, but primarily quality of treatment, something that HELIOS emphasizes.

With the aid of modern diagnostic procedures, such as the “vacuum biopsy”, it is possible to discover and precisely examine tumors that are not yet palpable and disorders without narcotics. If breast cancer is determined, the chances of recovery can be improved through new medicines with a targeted effect and without side effects like hair loss and nausea. More than three quarters of breast cancer patients are operated on without the need for a mastectomy, and in 2006, in partnership with the Nuclear Medicine Hospital, sentinel node biopsies were performed on more than every second patient (57 %): this is a decisive breakthrough with respect to the improvement of the quality of life of affected women. The medical treatment is supplemented by individual psychosocial care.

The Interdisciplinary Breast Center Berlin-Buch has received the seal of approval of the German Cancer Association and the German Association of Mastology for meeting the highest standards of care worldwide. Breast centers that fulfill certain requirements receive the certification. Those requirements include the collaboration of doctors from various specialty groups (gynecologists, internists, radiologists, surgeons, radiation therapists, oncologists, and pathologists), facilities equipped with the most modern medical devices and a minimum case count of performed operations and chemotherapies.
